DAY 01

Introduction to Exponentials with Focus: Impact (presented by facilitator)

Thinking exponentially is core to everything we teach at Singularity, this means that we start with showing how each year the power and/or speed of technology is doubling and/or the cost is dropping by half. Getting into the mindset of thinking exponentially is a fundamental first step for projecting into the future. During this session participants will not just understand the basic definition of exponential growth, but dive into its implications, and shift from a linear way of thinking to an exponential one.

We typically overestimate growth in the short term, and underestimate it in the long term due to the deceptive nature of exponential growth. Because computational technologies (including artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, advanced manufacturing, and more) progress exponentially, its growth and adoption can be surprising. As these technologies continue to democratize, access to use them becomes more widespread and more and more people, companies, and industries will have a role to play in how they’re leveraged.

This session will prepare you for thinking about these growth patterns, how they apply to your industry, and what role you can play in their use. For this program, the Intro to Exponentials session will have a special focus on leveraging exponential technologies to achieve positive impact, addressing the increase in responsibility that comes with the greater power that technologies give us.

AI & The (Overlooked) Future of Work

In this session we will explore the most overlooked topics in the future of work discussion. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of major workforce changes happening today. Explore the potential for AI as a tool to create a more equitable future of work. And walk away with actionable steps participants can apply today in their organizations to be an employer of choice – today and in the future.

Moonshot Mindset In Action: Drones, GovTech & the New Infrastructure For The Future

Drone delivery aimed at leapfrogging traditional road infrastructure, while GovTech aspires to build powerful digital platforms to deliver universally accessible public goods and services to all. What do these technology verticals have in common? A “Moonshot Mindset” and the vision of creating new infrastructure models for the future. Explore the early development of these exponential technologies unlocking emerging global solutions at an accelerated pace, reducing barriers of entry in legacy markets, and creating new industries from scratch. From inception to failures and real-world applications currently driving massive positive change and impacting millions around the globe, deep dive into the Moonshot Mindset, learn how to go from linear (10%) to exponential (10x) thinking, extract uncommon hacks from counterintuitive business models, and gain insights from the teams behind these breakthroughs and their collective forward-thinking.

Exponential Ethics

Exponential technologies have fundamentally transformed our capacity to change the world. However our moral psychology, evolved over hundreds of thousands of years, has remained fundamentally the same. Thus the question: how can we ensure that our technological capacities do not exceed our moral capabilities? This talk will introduce audiences to the major schools of thought within the study of ethics and provide a framework for identifying, analyzing and acting upon ethical issues. This method will be illustrated through application to ethical dilemmas arising from one of the most profoundly transformative and impactful technologies of our time, artificial intelligence

Decoding the Future

In this workshop participants will strengthen learners’ future forecasting muscles by applying the 6Ds framework.  Everyone brings (or picks) a recent news story about a technology that interests them. Using the 6Ds framework, participants will identify key components of this news and specific technology.  They will work in groups to determine whether an event is likely to happen in 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, or beyond, share their reasoning, and receive feedback from experts and other participants. This will empower the audience to recognize the potential impacts of horizon technologies that will impact their world.

During this session, participants will:

  • Understand how converging technologies are creating disruption
  • Use the 6Ds to analyze and predict the development trajectories of technologies in which they are most interested
  • Practice projecting technology trends into the future
  • Use evidence to explain and support their projection

Creating Space Ecosystems in an Exponential World

The global space industry has reached an inflection point. Space is no longer dominated by government space agencies and big aerospace companies. Exponential technologies in the space industry have led to the miniaturization of spacecraft and cheaper launch opportunities. Combined with diversification of funding sources, these technologies have allowed entrepreneurs and space start-ups to push towards the space frontier. Today, off-the-shelf technologies have democratized access to space products and services. While space-faring nations and “New Space” companies are poised to open on-orbit and cislunar economies, the rest of the world is also finally able to participate. Entrepreneurs around the world are leveraging advancements in space for economic growth and to solve global and national challenges here on Earth. Exponential technologies have allowed ideas and opportunities to emerge globally. In this session, we will explore the current space technological trends and applications brought about by global space entrepreneurs. And what the future holds as we take steps towards ensuring a sustainable future for humanity in space. We will learn about case studies of new space ecosystems, how they operate and what propels them. And how emerging and aspiring nations and space entrepreneurs across the globe can participate in this growing $400+ billion global space economy.

The Future is Garbage: 3D Printing from Recycled Plastic

By 2050, experts have predicted that up to 50% of global trade could be cut due to onsite fabrication, resulting in a possible 15% decrease in transportation carbon emissions. However, slashing supply chains is dependent on the ability to source raw materials. While 3D printing is a massive market opportunity, many have criticized 3D printing for often creating excessive plastic waste while constraining users to only those that can afford to import the expensive feedstock. This conversation will highlight pioneers using accessible plastic waste to 3D print a better future and detail the technological challenges & opportunity for anyone committed to printing a better society, one layer at a time.

Responsible AI

When it comes to automating decision making with AI, algorithmic bias can become hard-coded into data-driven technologies, despite our best intentions. Applications abound: from hiring to manufacturing optimization, from supply chain management to recommendation algorithms. But all AI applications are at risk of perpetuating, and augmenting, biases and thus coding blind spots into their models. Biases like this do not just mean that these AI’s are unfair or unjust, they can also affect your bottom line, if you don’t understand where the blind spots are.

This talk unpacks the workings of algorithmic bias, how to identify and analyze the mechanisms in AI and how to advocate for and build more socially responsible algorithms. Additionally, in this session we will dive into the limitations and possibilities of leveraging data driven technologies, and how to be a leader in the emerging space. Participants will learn to identify different kinds of algorithmic biases; will be able to locate points where biases enter their designs; and will learn to assess an automated decision making system on its risk for perpetuating biases.

This session shows opportunities to lead in this space and teaches insights in how algorithmic bias emerges through the design of automated decision making processes. Participants will learn about the use of proxies or data stand-ins to achieve results in measuring and optimizing for “hard to quantify” characteristics.

Surveillance, Finance, and Digital Freedom

We are in the middle of an incredible global social transformation, where all of our commerce and interactives are moving from the physical to the digital space. Long-predicted fears about surveillance police states have come to reality not only in China but in varying degrees all across the world, even in liberal democracies. Our money says more about us than our actions, and our money is digitizing too: from paper notes to credit cards to contactless to, perhaps, chips under our skin. Each “step forward” makes sacrifices with regard to privacy and freedom. Will our future economy be one of control and surveillance, or will we preserve any of our financial liberty?

The 10 Year Challenge

This session will focus on climate change. We will explore why it is such an urgent challenge to hold the global temperature increase to below 1.5°C and how this can be achieved through

exponential decarbonization across all key sectors (energy, food, transportation, manufacturing etc.), while creating prosperity for all and achieving the sustainable development goals (SDG) by 2030. Exponential technologies and future innovations will be key to driving the deep and systemic transformation which is required to achieve those goals. The talk will provide examples of emerging trends and moonshot solutions which are already being deployed to create societies which are zero emissions and resilient. During

the workshop, teams will work with climate scenarios and explore possible futures for their organizations or communities, while imagining how their 2050 world might look.

A Proof of Who You Are

Today, our ability to participate in the modern world hinges entirely on our ability to get legal proof of who we are. It is also essential to achieving the Global Goals.

Yet, there are more than 1 billion people without a recognized proof of identity (ID). This problem is proportionately affecting women and children, from the world’s poorest countries, but also refugees from war-torn regions and the stateless people.

New technologies, including biometric enrollment and blockchain-based identity, can be leveraged to create personal ID credentials virtually for everyone on the planet. But what’s been previously characterized as impartial, digitally collected data is now subject to the same biases and power imbalances of the offline world when it comes to use and ownership. Security breaches can compromise sensitive data and counteract humanitarian operations designed to protect the world’s most vulnerable people. And personal ID data can be weaponized against the individuals themselves.

Through a series of video testimonials, and the presenter’s own story, this session will bring into the spotlight the hidden facts about digital identity and raise important questions about the use of emerging technologies in humanitarian contexts.
