Leslie Oliver Karpas

Leslie Karpas, Head of Digital Manufacturing, is responsible for creating and developing strategy, identifying opportunities, and crafting product go-to-market execution plans involving the DM ecosystem of cutting edge technology.He has a diverse background ranging from computer vision, to industrial design & 3D printing, to CNC fabrication, to architecture. Prior to Stanley X, he was one of the co-founders of the computer vision startup LexSet, after being recruited as an Entrepreneur in Residence for Intellectual Ventures to commercialize one of their patent portfolios. LexSet uses 3D models to create training data for AI object recognition, which made headlines for being selected as one of the winners of the Verizon Built on 5G Challenge. Before that he was founder of a 3D printed respiratory mask startup Metamason, where he invented a method to print medical grade silicone in a partnership with 3D Systems, to create mass-customized CPAP masks for sleep apnea. This effort garnered a CES Innovation Honoree award, in addition to pulling him into Singularity University as one of their Digital Manufacturing Singularity Expert, members.Before his time as an entrepreneur Les worked for the CNC fabrication shop PSI in Oakland, fabricating stainless steel sculpture for the artist Anish Kapoor, including projects such as the Cloud Gate (aka the Chicago Bean), ArcelorMittal Orbit (aka the London Olympic tower), and Turning the World Upsidedown (aka the Jerusalem Hourglass). He started his career with the firm Auerbach consultants in San Francisco as an architectural lighting designer & theatrical design consultant doing lighting for museum exhibits as well as designing theaters for Cirque Du Soleil. He has a BS in Architecture with a second major in Theater from Washing University in St. Louis, and attended Art Center for Industrial Design for grad school.
