Dr. Silvia Curado

Singularity Expert: Medicine, Biotechnology

Silvia Curado, Ph.D. is a Singularity University expert in Digital Biology, Genetics, Medicine & Molecular Biology. She is currently Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology, NYU School of Medicine, and Program Director of the NYU Langone Comprehensive Program on Obesity. Her research interests lie in uncovering mechanisms underlying development of disease. Her scientific training began in biochemistry and has taken her through genetics, cellular and molecular biology, clinical research and most recently also population level – providing her with a comprehensive view on the development of complex diseases from molecule to population. She carried out her Ph.D. thesis in Genetics, Molecular Biology and Developmental Biology, at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, following her MSc. in Cell Biology at the University of Coimbra, in Portugal, in collaboration with the Hammersmith Hospital in London, United Kingdom. During her postdoctoral work at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) she worked on regenerative medicine. Silvia then joined the NYU School of Medicine as Singularity Expert, to co-direct a Research Center on Nanomedicine. In addition to her current regular leadership role, in response to the COVID-19 crisis she has recently helped forming and is co-leading a COVID-19 Consortium “COMBATCOVID” (Consortium for Multisite Biomedical Analytics and Trials on COVID-19).She is the author of the book Engenharia Genética – O Futuro Já Começou [Genetic Engineering - The Future Has Already Begun], and also President of PAPS (Portuguese American Postgraduate Society).
